FIATA President and Director General at ALACAT Congreso XXXVIII in Mexico
On 10 October 2022 FIATA President Ivan Petrov participated in the opening ceremony of the ALACAT XXXVIII Congreso in Riviera Maya, Mexico with about 200 participants. In his speech he addressed some of the challenges the industry is facing in the recovery from the Covid pandemic and solutions developed by FIATA to support its members. He reminded the priorities of FIATA, namely: Multimodality, digitalisation, sustainability, vocational training, trade facilitation. He reiterated the importance for individual Latin American companies to engage with FIATA and participate in the future of the global supply chain of which freight forwarders are the architects. He invited Latin American countries to become digital freight forwarders by using FIATA eFBL and Freightpay, the new digital services developed by FIATA for its members.
On 11 October, the last session of the ALACAT XXXVIII Congreso was dedicated to FIATA - 'The universe of Freight Forwarding'. President Ivan Petrov and Director General Stéphane Graber exchanged with ALACAT President Moises Solis and AMACARGA President Juan P. Pacheco on the trends of the industry among which were the need for multi-channel logistics, additional capacity, the eCommerce boom, and digitalisation. FIATA presented its responses to support its members, such as the FIATA digital Bill of Lading, its sustainability project and YLP Programme for the promotion of new talent. Freight forwarders are at the heart of logistics and by being united, the sector will be able to successfully meet the challenges of modern logistics.
FIATA talks digitisation with Colombian Planning Department
On 13th October 2021, FIATA's Director General Dr Stéphane Graber, FITAC Director General Miguel Espinosa, and FIATA Vice-President Neil Taylor, had an exciting meeting with the Colombian Planning Department, in which mechanisms for collaboration and joint work were identified to promote the digitisation of foreign trade operations, supply chain sustainability and the training of small and medium-sized enterprises with an emphasis on multimodality. The need to make the logistics sector more attractive to the new generation was also noted. This was an excellent opportunity to recall the essential role of freight forwarders as architects of global logistics.
AEO Programmes- Your feedback needed!
As part of its work on customs and trade facilitation, FIATA continues to advocate for accessible AEO Certification for companies of all sizes, including SMEs, with tangible benefits.
FIATA, in collaboration with IATA, has launched a survey to better understand levels of participation in AEO programmes, to assess the effectiveness of AEO certification and associated benefits, and to identify industry expectations.
Please take a couple of minutes to answer this survey so that FIATA can most effectively support you. The survey is open until 31 October 2022. FIATA`s association members as well as freight forwarders and customs brokers are invited to participate!
World Bank calls for FIATA members to join LPI Survey 2022
The next edition of the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) benchmarks logistics performance in around 160 countries. The document is to be published later in 2022. FIATA is the World Bank’s most important partner in the LPI survey, and it is thanks to the participation of FIATA’s members that the LPI can be published.
The World Bank invites you to take the survey now! The LPI provides the voice of logistics professionals: It is partly based on a survey among international freight forwarders who share their experience in moving goods and organizing international supply chains for their customers. This is a unique opportunity to “vote” and ultimately influence the environment that you, as professionals, operate in.
Please participate. It is very important to us to have your views! All responses are kept confidential and anonymous.
Completing the survey should only take 10 minutes. Find more information at lpi.worldbank.org. Questions? Email us at LPI@worldbank.org
Logistics connectivity of the Greater Caspian Region: viability of the middle corridor
The Greater Caspian Region Forum organised by the Joint Chamber of Commerce (JCC) in partnership with the Greater Caspian Association Geneva took place on 11 October in Zurich. During the meeting, Mr Babar Badat, Board Member and Former President of FIATA, gave a presentation about the logistics connectivity of the Greater Caspian Region, noting that global supply chain issues are at the forefront of concerns in the logistics industry, and that it requires developing connectivity in the region with the support of international organisations like FIATA. Mr Badat also gave an overview on transportation to Pakistan using the Middle Corridor, and spoke about regional organisations like ECOLPAF (ECO Logistics Providers Associations Federation) who promote trade facilitation, multimodality, and harmonisation of legislation.
The Middle Corridor, also called the Silk Road or Trans-Caspian Transport Route, focuses on China-Europe and Central Asia-Europe trade and is becoming a viable alternative to the long-established Northern and Southern route trade due to the ongoing crises and subsequent sanctions, as well as recent maritime supply chain disruptions. It was noted that shorter distances and competitive transportation costs in comparison with higher freight rates in 2021 are making it more attractive. However, the lack of a single transit operator, current delays on the route, and the need to develop regional transport hubs and infrastructure remain the main constraints for the increased volumes. It was also considered that the Middle Corridor needs to maintain momentum to go from a strategic vision to a specific project development in close cooperation with regional public and private sector partners.
In March 2022, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan signed a declaration on the Middle Corridor, and in the interim several infrastructure and port projects are on the way, including the Kazakhstan government’s plans to invest in railway modernisation and port infrastructure development by 2025, as well as development of the port of Baku in Azerbaijan. FIATA's Multimodal Transport Institute will monitor the development of this corridor to support the members in this regard.
AfCFTA Existential Priorities publication available to all members
In collaboration with the UNECA (UN Economic Commission for Africa), Francis Mangeni in this book aims to 'guide and assist implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) over the next 10 years. Each chapter considers a key area, raises issues for attention and points to possible ways forward. The introduction highlights the progress as of the end of 2021 in operationalizing and implementing the AfCFTA, while identifying the developmental challenges and existential threats ahead. The systems approach requires actions at the national, regional, continental and global levels. It involves continuous learning as a pivotal tenet of socioeconomic transformation and improvement. Lessons learned are continuously brought to bear on policy formulation and implementation. The Book has three parts. Part one has five framing chapters: Africa in the world, the architecture for Africa’s regional integration, two publics, economic integration, and from ratification to implementation. Part two covers energy costs, textiles and clothing, women and youth in trade, and the free movement of people. Part three considers digitalization, technology and innovation, and public health as critical areas during the next 10 years.'
